HVAC: MENG461 Calculation of the cooling load for a residential house In order to design an appropriate air-conditioning system for any building, the total
cooling load needs to be accurately estimated. Consider the layout below for a small
family residential house, located in the UAE, with all dimensions provided.
Determine the capacity of the air-conditioning system for the house considering the
following:
 The roof height of the building is 3.2 m.
 Number of the occupants can be assumed as 2 – 6 persons.
 For walls and roof, U = 0.6 W/m2 K while for the doors, U = 0.8 W/m2 K.
 The total wattage of the lighting is 600 W.
 For the equipment,
Kitchen appliances = 2000 W, Two computers = 150 W each, TV = 50 W.

software.
