*Review the comments you receive back for Paper One. Look to the more
detailed descriptions in Paper One directions if you don’t remember what to
watch out for in the sections. The paper content is the same as Paper One until
you get to prompt 7, however the point values of certain sections have been
changed to make this paper more rigorous.
STOP! Some students had a problem on paper one with quotations. This is not a
copy and paste assignment. In addition, many quotes you might copy would be
better said through paraphrasing if they are relevant. One of the easiest ways for a
faculty member to tell that a student does not know what you are talking about are
the desperate copy and paste quotations that are “splatted” into an essay because
you think that the author’s authority exceeds yours. Please see my using quotes guide
for when it is appropriate to use a quotation. Note how I used a quote at the very end
of my sample essay. I already said what I meant to say, I used the quote to
communicate a feeling, give the essay atmosphere. Just like a good title, the last
sentence can be powerful.

Preparing to write:
A. Select an artist in Artstor. For this paper, I have listed some possible choices to
start you out (posted on Titanium). However, you can choose any artist from the
geographic area and time period as long as it meets the following criterial.
• New Dates: country and date criteria: Germany, France, England, Spain, or
Italy, dated between the dates 1800-1880. Please note the date limits for
your second writing assignment are different.
• Your focus artworks must not have been discussed in class, but you can use
an artist discussed in class. *Review the image sets in Units 5-9 to make sure
your image is not in the study sets. Materials that might be covered in Units 10-
12 are fair game.
• Search for this artist in the Artstor image database available in the library
portal.
• Once you select an artist search by the artist’s full name and make sure that
Artstor has at least 35+ unique artworks by this artist.
• When you select your artworks capture significant, mature portions of the
artist’s career (i.e. do not discuss student work-this includes Prix de Rome
works).

• Caution please do not choose these artists: Marie Genevieve Bouliar, Joseph
Chinard, Louis Ducis, Joseph Ducreux, John Deare, Franz Messerschmidt,
Giovanni Panini, Pierre-Jacques Volaire, Franz Winterhalter, or any member
of the Tiepolo family. The reason for this prohibition is that I want you to be
successful on this paper and there is either not enough information on these
artists, poor quality of information, or the lack of variation in their artwork
or the direction that artist goes is minor. I don’t want you to be frustrated,
nor graded down.
• Finally, in the spirit of complete disclosure, if you are considering Louis-Leopold
Boilly. He is a follower not a leader and his paintings, in my opinion, are banal.
• If you meet all of the criteria above I will give you 5 points–if you don’t I will
deduct 5 points from your total score. This would be if you are close to the
class scope and assignment criteria. If you are too far off your paper will not
be accepted at all. You may not reuse a paper from another class.
