Essay—Multi-Paragraph (50 points)
British Literature Assignment Using all of the proper rules for a thoughtful and well-organized formal essay, write a multi-paragraph response
with a thesis statement and at least three body paragraphs. Show off your writing skills!!
Prompts: In a well-constructed multi-paragraph essay address ONE of the following:
1) At the end of his life, Hamlet asks Horatio to “tell [his] story” (5.2.328). Horatio loyally tells Fortinbras
what happens. Fortinbras has Hamlet’s body “bear[ed]…like a soldier to the stage” because his life has
proved worthy (5.2.374). They even play “soldier’s music and the rite of war” to honor his death
(5.2.378). They do this despite the fact that many people have died and Hamlet has lost Denmark to
Norway. Does Hamlet’s life deserve this honor and legacy? (Think about: what makes someone
have a legacy…Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Kobe Bryant etc and does Hamlet deserve the
same). British Literature Assignment
2) Compare and contrast two of Hamlet’s soliloquies. Analyze his progression of thinking and his
development as a man. Consider how the language (figurative language, tone, and diction) in the
soliloquies reflect his internal state.
General Guidelines: British Literature Assignment
MLA format
Your thesis statement should make an argument that is provable through textual analysis.
Your three or more body paragraphs should be substantial with debatable topic sentences. Each body
paragraph should include 2-4 quotations from the play (though if your quotations are one or two words
long, you may include more), which you then analyze (not summarize) thoroughly. Your analysis
should explain how and why your evidence supports a specific aspect of the argument in your thesis
statement. Each body paragraph should identify and analyze the literary devices employed in your
quotations. British Literature Assignment
