When it comes to treatment, the alcohol and other drug abuse counselor has various core functions. The first one is screening, which is the process of using standard criteria to determine whether one is eligible for admission. That is affected by various factors for example nature of the substance abuse, client’s physical condition, their psychological functioning, age, gender, place of residence just to name a few. Then there is the intake process which is somehow an extension of the screening process and includes admission and filling of various forms. Orientation may be done before, during or after the patient’s screening, and is basically explaining to the general nature and goals of the program, rules and disciplinary actions. In the assessment, the counselors identify and evaluates a patient’s strengths, weaknesses, needs, and problems in order to create a treatment plan. It’s an ongoing activity throughout treatment but is usually emphasized at the beginning. During treatment planning, both the counselor and the patient identify and rank problems that need resolution, and establish short-term and long-term goals and at the same time decide on a treatment process and the resources to be used. The next step is counseling which involves using special skills to assist individuals, families or groups in achieving the objectives set in treatment planning. Case management incorporates other services, agencies, and resources together in a planned framework towards achieving the established goals. There is bound to be difficulties in the treatment process especially for the patient, and crisis intervention helps in providing services that respond during acute emotional or physical distress. Client education, referral, report and record keeping, together with consultation with other professionals are also part of the process.
There are three types of treatment models for patients with both mental and drug problem. The first one is the Sequential treatment which involves participating in one treatment than the other afterward. The most common is treating drug addiction first then mental health follows. The second one is the parallel treatment, which involves both treatments simultaneously. The last one is the integrated treatment which involves a single unified and comprehensive treatment program for both the disorders. Co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders essay
For the treatment of duo disorders to be effective, there are various issues that have to be addressed. Treatment engagement which involves initiating and sustaining the treatment process by making sure the patient is comfortable for example through the provision of basic needs. Treatment continuity is important especially from one program to the next. Treatment comprehensiveness involves well-equipped programs which are able to engage clients, accommodate the various level of severity and also accommodate patients in various phases of treatment.
Duo disorders are different and unique and should be treated as such in order for the treatments to be effective. Patients should be engaged in the first step so that they can have a sense of responsibility and not feel coursed. With the right program and a determined patient, treatment can be very successful.
