Doctor jokes. Lawyer jokes. Priest and rabbi jokes. Stereotypical humor aside, Adler states “that stereotyping is useful as an initial guide to reality.” It goes on to say “the highly effective managers use the stereotypes as a first best guess about the group’s behavior prior to meeting any member of the group” (p. 78).

You are the owner of a small manufacturing company that you started several years ago. Your company has grown to 20+ employees, is very profitable, and makes products in a growing market. You offer your employees the full range of benefits — insurance, 401-K, etc. Everyone agrees it is a fun place to work, and turnover is very low. Until recently most of the work has been done by hand by skilled laborers. However, you realize that certain new machines, automation, and technology can greatly improve productivity and even expand your product base. You have built an addition to your shop where several state-of-the-art machines are being installed. Your plan is to train ten of your employees in the new technology, have them work in the new shop, and convert the old work space into a R&D lab. However, two weeks before this is scheduled to take place, four of your oldest and best workers come to you and say that they don’t want to make the move. They don’t want to learn how to operate the new equipment. They want to continue working as they have been.
How will you handle this?
