Long Assignment #1
What is spam and is it still a problem? Network administrators struggled against spam from at least the early 1990s, yet it remains a problem.
How has spam evolved as the internet has changed? (Or, has it remained largely the same despite changes in the underlying technology?)
Write an article of 2000-3000 words about spam. Define the term, describe the scope of the problem, and discuss possible solutions. Why
has a solution proven so elusive? What are the tradeoffs in eliminating spam?
You may find it worthwhile to include a personal testimonial of your own experience with spam. Do you ever get spam? If so, how much, and
how much time does it take you to get rid of it? Does it ever cause problems beyond wasting time?
Include at least three references — the two articles linked above plus at least one more that you find on your own. Use reputable sources such
as technical papers and well-known magazines. Do not use online-only sources such as blogs.
Submit an outline of your article in class on Wednesday, October 9.
Submit the full version of your article in class on Wednesday, Oct 16. Use the two-column template.
Use the LaTeX \section command to help organize your paper. At minimum, your paper will have an Introduction, a Conclusion, and the body;
divide the paper’s body into meaningfully-titled sections. Each section should be fleshed out in around 2-8 paragraphs. Use the sections to
reveal the top-level organization in your hierarchical outline.
