Credibility Essay Introduction
Say what you mean and mean what you say? This describes credibility as the foundation
of leadership. Theories review and keep track of the evolution of leadership over the past review
period from the heroic leaders, through the behaviorist theories, contingency theory, trait
theories, situational leadership and on transactional and transformational leadership that offer
insight into successful leaders qualities. However, there has been a shift from generic behaviors
and characteristics of the leader to recognition on the importance of leaders’ reaction to different
contexts and situations in relation to their followers. The writer put it clearly that leadership is a
relationship and has to meet the desires of those who are led.
Honesty, competent and inspiring makes the sound credibility of a leader. This has been
proven by communication researchers in different management levels. James also vividly shows
that followers will not believe the message if they do not believe in the leader.

James M. Kouzes is the chairman of the Tom Peters Company and senior person at the
Center for innovation and entrepreneurship at the Leavey School of business, Santa University.
Barry Z. Posner is professor of leadership at Santa Clara University and dean of the
Leavey School of Business.
James and Posner are the coauthors of The Leadership challenge Planner, leadership
challenge and Encouraging the Heart. They also developed the highly acclaimed leadership
Practices inventory and LPI online.com, 360 degrees assessment tool based on the five practices
James definition of credibility; generally, the word credible was derived from a Latin
culture with the meaning of believing. According to James and Posner, any person we believe is
credible. When a person do what he say he will do and be consistent then he earns credibility.

He says leadership is about behavior and not personality. It is also about how a leader
thinks and behaves while others follow him. Personal behavior needs to be consistent but internal
and external factors influence it from time to time.
