Critical Thinking Paper Assignment (Urban Plazas/Urban Design) Research in the profession of landscape architecture is very important. So is Writing. The current knowledge about spacial planning, materials, environmental concerns, and other areas of understanding is constantly evolving. It is critical to be able to access accurate, reliable information when needed. It is also important to think critically about this information. You will conduct research throughout your career at various levels and for many different reasons, from understanding installation techniques to preparing written text for interpretive signs to preparing written documents and plans. Of course, if you continue your studies beyond the undergraduate level, research is even more important. Research forms the foundation of everything that we do in practice. Objectives of this Assignment -Improve library use skills in general -Help you familiarize yourself with the library and the various materials and resources contained there (including our CAED librarian, Jesse Vestermark) – Develop the practice of seeking knowledge for understanding – Provide depth and meaning to you as a practitioner – Critical Thinking Paper Assignment (Urban Plazas/Urban Design) Think critically about research information and data – Reinforce the idea that wikipedia / google are merely a starting point, not the sole source of information Format You will use the information and skills covered by Jesse Vestermark, CAED college librarian, to research and write on a topic area in Landscape Architecture that you would like to learn more about. Use the resources at the library to research the topic you choose and compile a short paper that summarizes what you have learned. You must include information gathered from a minimum of three (3) journal articles and one (1) book (including ebooks and journal articles). It is not necessary to read the entire book for the completion of this assignment (but don’t let that stop you). The journal articles must be scholarly journals, not magazines from popular culture or trade journals. You may use such resources, however, it will be in addition to the required sources listed above. Your paper must include an argument that you support, not with opinion or speculation, but a statement or hypothesis that you support with data and information that you obtain from your research. By argument I mean; take a position on an issue and then build a case for it. Critical Thinking Paper Assignment (Urban Plazas/Urban Design) This argument can be in the form of a question, often referred to as a hypothesis or thesis question. For example, it is generally believed that eco-tourism brings economic development to areas while preserving the natural ecosystem. You may want to argue that there are impacts from ecotourism that also need to be considered (question form – Are there ecological impacts from eco-tourism and if so, what are they?). If you are having trouble deciding whether you are making an argument, one way to test this is if the statement is framed in a way that it could be answered as “I agree” or “I disagree”. For example, if you stated that many students in California are bilingual, then that is not something to agree or disagree with. It is simply a fact. If instead you stated that students who are bilingual perform better in school than those that are not, then that is something that can be answered with the agree or disagree test. These are examples of what I mean by – making an argument. Your assignment will be formatted as follows and will include: -Minimum of 800 but no more than 1,000 word written paper, double spaced (bibliography, title, name, etc. may be single spaced) on 8.5 x 11 paper. Margins can be set as you wish. -Citations of source material within the body of the paper followed by a bibliography using the APA style (see below). Cover page and abstract are not required. -NO MORE THAN 2 direct quotes are allowed. -A title for your paper at the beginning, centered -Your name, the date, and the class number in the upper right hand corner – first page -Images are encouraged but not required. But most important, it is unethical to use the work of others without giving proper credit to their work, even if you restate their work in your own words. Obviously, this is true in the professional world as well. To help you understand how to correctly cite sources, see the handout illustrating the APA (American Psychological Association) style on polylearn along with this assignment, which is commonly used to cite sources within the social sciences. I don’t know what topic should I name of this essay, please help me out. Please follow the instruction and I will try to update as much as possible.
