ENGL 112 Reflection Assignment Write a letter to your instructor reflecting on your writing journey and the progress that you have made in English 112
this semester.
In order to fully embrace and master the requirements of letter writing, your letter must demonstrate all of the formal
components that a professional letter exhibits. These components include: the writer’s name, the writer’s address, the
date, the recipient’s name, the recipient’s address, a salutation, the body of the letter, a closing, and a signature. For our
purposes, you may use the address of Mercy College as both my address and yours too if you wish (for privacy
purposes).
I am the recipient of your letter; therefore, the letter should be addressed to me. Although the letter is addressed to me,
the content of the letter will be about your writing, your progress, your challenges, and your reflections as a student of
college composition.
Consider this letter a final reflection of the entire course and the work that you produced in English 112.
In your letter, please do the following: ENGL 112 Reflection Assignment
■ Reflect on important discoveries: What important realizations or discoveries did you make regarding some
of the themes/ topics that we explored in The Bluest Eye? (Identity politics, race/gender discrimination,
problematic standards of beauty, etc.)
■ Reflect on your favored moment/passage from The Bluest Eye: Why was this moment particularly
revealing and what did it teach you?
■ Reflect on the essay that you are most proud of: What made it successful? Explain why you think this
piece showcases your strongest work.
■ Reflect on the assignment that you believe requires further development: What made it challenging?
Explain why you think your writing may have faltered in this area.
■ Reflect on the consistencies that you observe within your writing, regardless of the different nature
of each essay: What do these consistencies reveal about your individual “style” of writing and strengths
and/or weaknesses as a writer?
■ Reflect on this question: Did you become a better writer over the course of the semester? Explain.
Guidelines: ENGL 112 Reflection Assignment
■ Your letter should be approximately 1-2 pages. Professional letters are typically single-spaced.
■ Be certain that your letter comprehensively addresses all or most of the bullet points above. If there are other
aspects of your writing or of the course that you wish to highlight in your letter, you are at liberty to do so.
■ Be mindful that formal letters are professional and should demonstrate an appropriate tone, one that is slightly
more formal than your everyday language. The most successful letters will also give the reader a sense of your
own authentic voice.
■ Be sure to include all of the necessary letter components (outlined above in the directions). Please view sample
professional letter templates online, if referring to a model would be helpful for you.
■ Be sure to proofread and refine your letter before submitting. ENGL 112 Reflection Assignment
