1. Which statement in the article do you see as the thesis statement? After reading the
article, does the author follow through on the thesis statement? What is the author’s
background? Does it lend credence to the article? Why or why not?
I think the thesis is: “I have found that long before Confederate monuments occupied city
squares, African Americans used those same public spaces to celebrate their history.” I
don’t think the article is reliable enough. It describes the actions/celebrations of African
Americans but not in a proper way. There is a negative connotation throughout the
reading towards African Americans. I don’t think the author is African American!
2. The author provides three examples of celebrations African Americans have used in the
past to reclaim the position and role in American history. In what ways do these
celebrations advance the Black resistance to absolute white dominance? English 110 Sections 42032 and 66275 Assignment
3. In the last paragraph, the author states, “Activists are telling a new story of African
American history out of the relics of a white supremacist past, just as they did in public
celebrations in the 19th century.” What does she mean by that? Will this new story
change much in race relations?
