Geology 111 Lab Report The first goal of this assignment is to report the data collected during the field trip to the outcrop of the Pennsylvanian Monongahela Group. Important data to report include: location, age, Formation/Group, general characteristics of the outcrop, and the characteristics of each layer. The second goal of this assignment is to write an effective essay that is well-organized. The essay should start with an effective topic sentence that introduces the topic and organizes the essay. Each successive paragraph should be clear and concise with no unnecessary words, yet have good flow and be easily readable. There should be a concluding statement that summarizes the report.
The source material is the data collected upon visiting to the outcrop during lab. You may also consult your text for details about sedimentary rocks, strata, sedimentary structures, and weathering. You should cite the publication that contains the geological map that was used during lab to determine the ages and names of the rock units (Collins and Smith, 1977). You should use at least one citation within the body of your text in a style exactly like the one in the previous sentence. You should include the following reference at the end of your paper Collins, H.R. and Smith, B.E., 1977, Geology and mineral resources of Washington County, Ohio: Ohio Geological Survey Bulletin, v. 66, 134 p.

Writing Prompt: Write an essay reporting the data collected at the field trip locality during lab. The essay should start with an introductory paragraph that starts with a clear topic sentence and tells the reader how the essay is organized as follows: Section 1: Topic and organization Section 2: Locality and general geological information Section 3: Previous work background on possible environments Section 4: Data presentation Section 5: Interpretation Section 6: Conclusion
The second section should outline the location and general description of the outcrop. This paragraph should indicate the location of the outcrop down to the quarter quarter section and latitude and longitude, indicate where the outcrop is in relation to roads and nearby towns, and indicate the name of the topographic quadrangle. General geological information should include the age and name of the formation and groups (put the citation for the reference after the formation and group names so we know where you got this information), the general characteristics of the outcrops, including overall thickness of the exposure, attitude of the strata, and general rock types.

The third section should summarize the characteristics of two potential sedimentary environments that might have resulted in these sand and shale strata. Use information from your text in the chapter on sedimentary rocks, rivers and shoreline environments as well as the characteristics summarized below. First write about beach environments, then write about river/floodplain environments. Do not mention your data from the field trip
in this paragraph. This is like the process of using multiple working hypotheses. In an actual study you would list numerous other possible environments. After you present your data in the fourth section, you use the fifth, interpretation section, to compare and contrast your data with the analogs that you summarized in the third section.
