HSE 353 Module Eight Assignment Guidelines and Rubric
Educating and Referring a Client With HIV/AIDS and Other Communicable Diseases
Overview: An integral part of our working in the substance use counseling profession is education and referral. Substance use clients have multifaceted concerns beyond their addiction. These clients may also partake in other high-risk activities, such as the sharing of needles, unprotected sexual relations, and lack of self- care. They may also have inadequate access to healthcare. These high-risk behaviors can lead to communicable diseases such as Hepatitis C, HIV, and AIDS. It is imperative that counselors understand how to screen for these diseases and offer education (on prevention and treatment), and well as referrals for clients whose health may be in jeopardy due to their substance use.
