Life after Death Assignment
In the whole universe, human beings are the only animals who understand that death is inevitable. Understanding does not mean that they are okay with it. Over the many years of existence, people have sought eternal life, finally pinning their hope on science. Even with the hope that death can be postponed. What can be better and more fulfilling is learning that there just might be life after one dies.
The belief in life after death is very much in a way mysterious and comes in all shapes and sizes. (Kreeft) There are those that will argue of the life being in existence in a physical body while others say it takes place outside the body. With the physical body, it involves things like reincarnation, with the Christian and Islamic doctrine. It states that God will resurrect the human body sometime in the future. Survival outside the physical body is considered as survival in a non-physical body.
So is there any life after death, and do those who say so have evidence to support it? Dr. Jeffrey Long, who is a radiation oncologist, says that if one looks at the scientific evidence, the answer is undoubted yes. His work mostly includes doing research on near-death experiences of thousands of people who have gone through them. (Fitzpatrick) Life after Death Assignment
The discussion for or against life after death still continues. For those in support, most convincing evidence usually comes from the numerous stories and reports of very weird behavior. Among these occurrences are out-of-body experiences, ghost sightings, near-death experiences, memories of past lives and mediums communicating with the dead. If at all these occurrences are what they appear to be, they would constitute empirical proof for the belief that we survive death. It, however, does not say that after coming back, one lives forever.
On the other hand, Professor Peter Kreeft has various reasons that he says people should believe in life after death. To start off, he believes that there is no strong enough reason not to believe that there is life after death. He points out that each body part is usually independent of the other. The body is just an instrument, but the soul stands on its own. When a body fails, there is no evidence to show that the soul is no longer there. Life after Death Assignment
Although some people turn to science for most of these answers, many people trust religion more, because it gives them some security. Science might provide the answers and confirm that there is life after dealt, but it doesn’t tell how that life will be like. For someone who believes and has faith in God, they want to not only be assured that there is life after death but also guided on how to make things right with God so as to have a fulfilling life. Christianity is one religion that is surrounded by many beliefs, like the Protestants, the Catholic, the Baptists and other believers. What is common with all of them is that there is an afterlife, which is controlled by our actions here on earth. There are two places in the afterlife, the heaven, and hell. Hell is for the wicked ones, and it has this hellfire that will last for eternity. On the other hand, Heaven is for the righteous and those who will live as commanded by God. Heaven is also for eternity. So eternal life is for everyone, just that they all don’t get to go to the same place. People are asked to repent their sins and ask for forgiveness so that they can enjoy eternal life in Heaven. (ZAMMIT)
In Buddhism, they accepted the Hindu doctrines of both karma and reincarnation, together with the idea that the primary goal of the religious life is to escape the cycle of birth and death. According to Buddha, people are bound to the cycle of birth and death by their desires. People crave for just about anything in the world, and this makes them sin. Therefore, they have to be reincarnated and brought back for another chance. If there were no desires, the whole process of reincarnation would not be there. (ZAMMIT) Life after Death Assignment
They do not believe that human beings have eternal souls that are independent of the physical body. They, however, believe that each person has a combination of habits, memories, desires, sensations, and many others, which deludes one into thinking that they have a long and stable lasting self. These are however put together as a unit, and reincarnates one life after the other. They believe the body to be the source of all suffering, and that’s why the goal is to obtain release.
According to Tibetan Buddhism, after one dies, the spirit goes through a process that lasts forty-nine days and is divided into three stages which are called Bardos. After the Bardo is complete, the person then enters nirvana, which is a purifying process, and returns to earth for a rebirth. It is paramount that the person dying remains acutely aware for as long as possible. That is because the thoughts one has before death, will influence the nature of both the after-death experience and if at all nirvana is not achieved, the state of one’s next incarnation. The first stage of Bardo is the dying stage, called the Bardo of Dying. It begins at death and extends from half a day to four days. That is the time required for the departed to realize that they have left the body. In this stage, there is an ecstatic experience of the primary clear white light, and the most righteous experience the most light. Stage two is the Bardo of luminous mind, where the departed encounters hallucinations due to the karma created during life. Unless they are highly developed, the departed still feels as though they are still in the body. After that, the person then encounters different ghosts, either the peaceful or the wrathful deities. That depends on someone’s karma. Only the most evolved and righteous individuals can skip the Bardo experience altogether. They Transit into the paradise realm. The last stage is the Bardo of rebirth, which is the process of reincarnation. Just like Christians, the Buddhists are also given second chances at salvation, only that the Christians have to make the decisions themselves.
