Major Paper III Assignment Topic: People in your age group are the beginning of a new generation. You are no longer part of the much discussed Millennial generation, so what is your generation like? What are its defining characteristics? Choose a song that exemplifies this. What does this song say about people of your generation? What are their key values and world view?
Audience: Your audience is Auburn University faculty. You are writing to them in order to help them better relate to incoming freshmen and more fully understand your world view. Think about the characteristics of this audience—age, race, gender, political stance, geographic origins, values, etc. Keep these characteristics in mind as you write so that you can better appeal to your audience.
Major Paper III Assignment
Description: Choose a song that defines your generation and support your claim with personal anecdotes (brief stories from your life or the lives of people you know that illustrate aspects of your generation) as well as research. What does this song say about people of your generation? What are their key values and world view? You can choose any song you want (deeply religious to highly obscene), but you must provide me with a printed copy of the lyrics. It doesn’t have to have been written by a member of your generation if you think it demonstrates the essential aspects of your generation.
You will begin with an introduction that introduces your generation and the song you have chosen;
Next you will have 2-4 discussing the various aspects of the song that symbolize what your generation is like. Pay attention to all of the musical aspects. You should include at least one paragraph on an aspect other than the lyrics;
Compose a transition paragraph similar to the one you used in Major Paper #2.
Then you will have 2-4 demonstrating through research and personal anecdotes how the ideas found in the song are present in the members of your generation. Stay away from generalized support. You need specific examples from your life (or the lives of others of your generation) to support the idea that the song reflects the essential characteristic of your generation and its world view.
Major Paper III Assignment
(Note: You are not writing about a common world view of people in your age group, but specifically of your generation. For example, you would not be writing about how new freshman view the world. Your parents were once new freshmen. I was once a new freshman, but neither your parents nor I are members of your generation. How does your generation view the world that is different from previous ones?)
Your essay should:
Articulate and develop a clear and compelling thesis;
Include a minimum of 3 sources;
Be written in a clear, precise, and active prose style;
Include a title that reflects the spirit and scope of the essay;
Be 6-7 pages in length (double-spaced, one-inch margins, 12 point Times New Roman typeface);
