MAYAN CULTURE ESSAY INTRODUCTION.
The article herein gives an exposition of the Mayan culture.1300 years ago, in the jungles of
Yucatan Peninsula and the Guatemala, the Mayan Culture was at its height. This article covers
their history and background, it also highlights their rules of culture and seeks to explain the
mystery behind the downfall of a culture so successful. At around 800AD they left their cities to
prey the rainforest, I have outlined some factual evidences concerning the Mayan culture, where
the lost people went to and how, without technology and metal, they were able to soar high and
become such a success.
HISTORY AND BACKGROUND.
The Mayan civilization lasted a duration of about 3500 years, this was majorly in the period
between 2000BC and 1500 CE. (THE MAYA) At the peak of their civilization, its region
includes the large portions of Central America and Mexico. It has been proven from
archeological studies that they had no technology whatsoever and their artistic level and high
intellectual levels, this makes them very admirable. Their calendar systems them special in a
way, they used linear accumulation of days and it is said that they only had to increment a day to
their calendar after 5000 years, comparatively ours seems lesser efficient due to the need of
incrementing a day after every four. At about 600 AD, the Mayan were able to transform any
idea into a writing system, they used bars, dots and say for instance, a sea shell ,they could write
numbers to millions.
MAYAN CULTURE ESSAY
The Olmec people are a key success toward the rise of the Mayan culture. They lived in the
jungles to the East of present day Mexico, they had a peak of their civilization between 1200 and
500 BC. (Maya Civilization) The Olmec diverted their attention from hunting and gathering into
agriculture, this made them establish permanent homes that led to establishment of
monuments,temples,market places and palaces. The Mayan Culture borrowed a lot from them
and this formed a strong base that saw them rise higher in the ranks of a superior and successful

The Mayan culture in a nutshell can be thought of as of having been composed of three major

Pre-Classic, Classic and Post-Classic.
Pre-Classic period lasted a duration timed at 200 BCE to 300 CE.At these times the Maya were
simple farmers and their family structures lived in compounds or group of buildings. Gradually,
the population saw a rapid growth and the Maya began establishing government systems that
would help in governing the populace. At around 500 BCE, they developed their form of writing
known as the hieroglyphic writing. This was an improvement of the writing idea borrowed from
the Olmec’s. (MAYA, n.d.)
