MSE-4051 Practical Report Guidelines/Marking Criteria.
Deadline: 17th of April 2018.
Haematoxylin and Eosin Stain (H&E)
Periodic Acid Schiffs Stain (PAS)
Alcian Blue PAS (ABPAS)
MSE-4051 Practical Report Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this practical you will have all stained by hand the above stains to completion. In doing so you will demonstrate good laboratory practice. As well as discussing the diagnostic utility of these stains, you will identify the structures microscopically and indicate which tissue components have stained with which dyes and why.
MSE-4051 Practical Report Assessment:
You will be required to write up this practical and present your conclusions on the diagnostic utility of these techniques. You will need to note their appearances and staining localisations within the tissues and comment on the differences in the staining techniques. This will account for 40% of your module mark.
Format for Completing a Practical Report
MSE-4051 Practical Report Total Word Count 2000 words
Always give a clear title as specified in the practical book / handout.
One or two sentences indicating the most important parts of the practical.
Information should be given on the necessary background to the practical and its aims and objectives. Explain the purpose of the investigation and details of the stains.
MSE-4051 Practical Report Materials and Methods
This section enables others to reproduce your work. Give a brief outline of the method(s) involved but as procedures are well documented in the practical book, use this section to include any relevant alterations in the procedure, e.g. a change in the length of staining with a dye.
Please feel free to write “refer to the practical handbook” for the materials and methods.
For each tissue/stain produce a figure containing the idealised histological image. Label the figures accordingly. See examples of results and discussion on Blackboard for guidance.
MSE-4051 Practical Report Discussion
Discussion is defined as “to examine by argument” and it should consist of an examination of your case (supported by your results) in relation to the objectives of the practical.
Histological images of pre-diagnosed pathologies can be accessed using this link:
Your authority for some of the statements made. The purpose of the practical sessions is to demonstrate some of the basic principles involved in analysis of clinical samples and to illustrate some of the typical values obtained in certain disease conditions. Remember to reference in Harvard Style.
MSE-4051 Practical Report Assessment Criteria
Assessment question: Present your conclusions on the diagnostic utility of these techniques along with their other applications in the wider cellular pathology field. This will account for 40% of your module mark.
