New Hollywood essay Identify what you see as being three or four of the dominant narrative, thematic, and/or stylistic qualities of the “New Hollywood” cinema. An important part of this includes thinking about how these films’ qualities compare and contrast with the “classical” Hollywood films of the 1940s and 1950s. For evidence, compare elements of Targets (1968) with two other New Hollywood films: Chinatown (1974), The Godfather (1972) You are also welcome to look at other “New Hollywood” films, if you wish to take the time to find them (i.e., Easy Rider, Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate, etc).

I was just simply listing the ones available on Swank. Please only consider the ones included with Geoff King’s “Hollywood Renaissance” (so not the “Blockbuster” films that came later, and which we’ll look at next week). Two additional requirements: be sure to cite the King article on the “New Hollywood” and include some consideration of the influence of avant-garde and/or documentary modes of filmmaking on Hollywood’s shift from a “classical” to a “post-classical” style of filmmaking.
