TSRs (which stand for Thesis, Support, and Relevance) are SHORT, evaluative writing pieces. They should be NO MORE than 500 words, and preferably around 300 (about ½ page typed in 12-point font). Each TSR has three sections: Thesis – What is the author’s main argument? This is the driving question or theme throughout the article. You should identify the subject matter the author discusses, and his/her stance/argument/theory on the issue. This should be only 1-2 sentences long (no more than 100 words).
Support – How does the author support his or her assertion? This is the part of the evaluation where you identify and summarize the key components of the author’s argument. What data does he or she use? How does he or she use the data to support his or her thesis? Try to keep this section to 150-250 words; if you are using significantly more words than this, you should go back and try to identify only the key supporting points, rather than summarizing the article paragraph-by-paragraph. 3) Relevance – Why is this important to Anthropology? This is the evaluation part.
How does this article contribute to our understanding of anthropology? Why is this significant or ground-breaking (or: is it even significant?)? This can be fairly short – 3-5 sentences or 100-150 words. Thesis What are the 2-3 big points of this or these article(s)? What do/does the author(s) want us to know? Can you summarize the above points into one larger, all-encompassing idea? Try to get it to 1 sentence (2 at most) at the end of paragraph
1. This is the thesis. Support For each of the big points you listed in question 1, what is the evidence provided to support or illustrate each point? You should try to identify at least 1 piece of evidence for each point you list. Of the evidence listed in question 3, which pieces directly relate to the Thesis you identified above? You should be able to work this down to 2-4 main sub-points, all of which support (build upon) the main Thesis. Relevance Why is this/these article(s) important? Does it alter our understanding of some important aspect of Anthropology? Does it uncover new evidence? This is the part where you need to decide the importance of the article by referencing the book chapter relevant to language and culture
