The paper should be a research paper that poses a research question or debate in the literature on communism or post-communism in Russia (or the other republics of the Soviet Union or communist/post-communist Eastern Europe).
You should make an analytical argument based on the empirical data presented. The paper should take into account counter-arguments as well.
You must provide adequate citations in the form of footnotes or endnotes. You may also use the internal citation/MLA system. For either style, you should include the page number of the cited information.
All papers must have a full works cited page with a minimum of twelve sources from academic journals, books, reliable datasets (such as Freedom House/ Nations in Transit), or primary source documents. Other sources (websites, newspaper articles) can be used in addition to those twelve.
Use only reliable internet sources. Wikipedia will not count as one of the main twelve sources and should be used sparingly!
Some academic journals can be found online, but often they do not have every year online. You should search online and in the library for older editions. Try using WPSA, JSTOR, and other search systems. Ask the reference librarian for help. Gordon Anderson specializes in European and Russian sources.

Paginate and staple all papers!!!!
Be sure to properly footnote your papers and to provide a bibliography of at least fifteen sources. Papers that are not adequately footnoted will lose significant points!
