Sociology of Violence Assignment There are two options for the Spring 2020, due Monday May 11th at midnight. This is a
hard deadline, meaning while early submissions are welcome, that I can’t accept late papers
after this date and be able to meet the university’s deadline for final grades.
Some people were quite keen on doing the independent research topic that had been originally
set for the final, but keeping in mind our current circumstances and the struggle some students
are having in keeping up with the online work load I am giving another, easier option. Due to
the research paper being considerably more work, it will be worth more points.
OPTION A (worth 25% of final grade): Sociology of Violence Assignment
Independent research paper focusing on a violent event and how it connects to the society
where it took place (e.x. Bloody Sunday in Northern Ireland, the Tulsa OK massacre, the
bombing of Hiroshima/Nagasaki/Dresden etc). You can pick your own topic or ask me to
suggest one. Minimum 5 pages (before double spacing, standard 12 point font)make sure you
answer the key Ws- who, what, where, when, why and how. But don’t just spend 5 pages
narrating what happened- I want to know how this connects to some of the key theories and
themes of the course on violence and society, and how they can help us understand what
happened and what it means. You must use citations (in text or footnotes) and a
bibliography.
OPTION B (15% of final grade): Sociology of Violence Assignment
3 page reflection response paper on the course- what did you learn, what were the most
helpful resources or what would you have chosen differently, and how can you connect this
course to your life or the world around you.
SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING OPTION A OR B…
The quizzes are graded out of your five highest quiz grades, totaling 50%. The midterm is worth
25%, and the final 15-25% depending on which you chose. If you choose Option B, I highly
recommend you catch up on any quizzes you have missed and strongly suggest you do the
optional sixth quiz to complete this course. If you are too far behind, the university may give
you the option to take a pass/fail instead. If you are missing any work you have probably heard
from me many, many times but you can double-check if you’re unsure. Sociology of Violence Assignment
