Topic 5 Question 1 Opal essay There is no exact age when a child can be a part of the IEP and placement process. I believe a child should participate or give insight whenever they are able to understand the process and their learning/other disability. Specifically, IDEA provides that the public agency must include the child with a disability at the IEP meeting “whenever appropriate and requires that the child be invited to attend the meeting “if the purpose of the meeting will be the consideration of the postsecondary goals for the child and the transition services needed to assist the child in reaching those goals (Center for Parent Information and Resources, n. d., p. 1).” The child’s insight should be taken into consideration because the students know themselves better than anyone. Students are brighter today than ever. They grasp more and are more vocal at younger ages. Students can self-advocate closer to the transition stage. Usually the transition stage is introduced around 16 years of age. At this age, the children understand more about becoming an adult and they have matured some. It is the parents’ rights to make the decision on when the child should attend, but the child and teacher can assist in making the decision if the parent allows. I believe it is very important to get the child’s opinion and feelings about their education and what area they think their strengths and weaknesses lie.
